American Airlines’ interest in Latin America
The carrier American Airlines has a strong presence in Latin America, connecting with destinations all over the region from its hubs in Miami and Dallas, mainly. This winter season alone, American Airlines’ schedule will be 24.3% bigger than its pre-COVID schedule, offering over 2,000 weekly flights to 93 destinations in the region.
For instance, American Airlines recently resumed its seasonal flight from Miami to Montevideo Carrasco International Airport (MVD) in Uruguay, operating three flights per week. In November, American Airlines will fully benefit from the US’ relaxation of travel rules to Cuba by launching services to five destinations in this Caribbean country. American will service Holguín (HOG), Santa Clara (SNU), Santiago (SCU), Varadero (VRA), and Camagüey (CMW), all from MIA, in addition to Havana (HAV). Also this month, American will resume its operations to Managua (MGA), Nicaragua, completing its network in the region.
In the first three quarters of 2022, American Airlines had US$4.35 billion in revenue from the Latin American market. This is the second-highest revenue behind the domestic segment. Additionally, during the third quarter alone, Latin America created US$1.59 billion in revenue, with a passenger load factor of 87.4% (the biggest among all the company’s markets) and the second-highest yields, behind the domestic market.
