Which do you think are in the top 10 this summer?
Los Angeles International Airport ended 2022 with 65.9 million passengers, down by a quarter versus 2019. Aside from 2020/2021, 65.9 million was its lowest traffic volume since 2012. In the first of three articles on Los Angeles, I examine its top domestic and international routes this summer as its recovery continues.
Summer 2023: domestic flights
Los Angeles is the US’ sixth-biggest airport by domestic passenger flights this summer (March 26th-October 28th), based on the latest Cirium data. The domestic market accounts for more than three quarters (78%) of the airport’s operation.
Airlines have scheduled just over 124,000 domestic departures (double for both ways), equivalent to 571 daily. While entirely unsurprising, it is only surpassed by Atlanta (210,000), Denver (184,000), Chicago O’Hare (183,000), Dallas Fort Worth (181,000), and Charlotte (140,000).

Summer 2023: 105 domestic routes
Los Angeles’ domestic passenger network encompasses 105 non-stop destinations this summer. They are in 42 states, with California, Texas, Nevada, Hawaii, and New York accounting for nearly half (46%) of its services.
Breaking down Los Angeles’ domestic network by state shows it serves a median of two destinations per state. Inevitably, it has far more routes within California (15) than anywhere else, followed by Texas (eight), Florida (six), and Washington (five).

The top 10
As of April 4th, the following 10 domestic airport pairs have more than 49,000 departing flights, accounting for 40% of Los Angeles’ total. They’re so fundamental that they have six times more services than the airport’s bottom 50 destinations. Of course, results would be somewhat different if city pairs were examined instead.

What about international?
After JFK and Miami, Los Angeles is the US’ leading international airport this summer. It has over 34,000 departing passenger flights (average of 157 daily). Based on at least four departures, its international network spans 74 destinations.

Some 41 countries are served non-stop. To the surprise of no one, Mexico is its top market (26% of international services), then Canada (16%), the UK (8%), Japan (7%), and Australia (4%). While Los Angeles ranks as ‘only’ the US’ third airport to Mexico, behind Dallas Fort Worth and Houston Intercontinental, it serves 16 airports there. Then it is Canada (six).

The top 10
London Heathrow has more Los Angeles flights than any other airport. If city pairs were analyzed, it would still be first – it would have more flights given Norse Atlantic’s new London Gatwick service (daily from June 30th). But Tokyo would be second. Notice Taipei. Starlux will begin the route from Los Angeles on April 27th.
